Here's your opportunities for the week + the best online events at NYC Climate Week.

Roles, events + opportunities just for you

Opportunity Seeker highlights ways you can grow your career and personal impact. We’re here to open up opportunity so more of us can belong in spaces that need us.

It’s a big hello from East London. I’m here for a few board meetings as the summer ends and to join the big queue for climate and nature (but more on that later).

Lots of new people signed up this week — there’s over 500 of you, so welcome 👋. Feel free to find out more about who’s writing this or hit subscribe if a friend forwarded this.

Today we’re going to explore:

  • Opportunities in FemTech, human rights and effective altruism

  • How to get a free Soho House membership (if you’re under 27, sigh)

  • 7 ways to pivot into venture capital 💸

  • 3 opportunities to be an activist without joining a march

  • And my pick of the free online events + parties at NYC Climate Week

I wrote a lot of this while on the train down from Scotland 🚂, and as my playlist bounced around these lyrics from Fred Again stuck out (you can listen to the song itself here)…

If only you could see yourself in my eyes. You’d see you shine, you shine…

A potluck of opportunities…

I spent several minutes trying to decide on how these opportunities link together… and to be honest there is no theme? So consider this a potluck of interesting roles, board spots and mentoring opportunities.

  • Remote board roles: Interested in how giving can be more effective? Effective Altruism Australia is looking for new Board Subcommittee members - ideally you’ll have expertise in either marketing, engineering, climate science, or law.

  • Brussels: The US based Center for Democracy & Technology are looking for an EU Programme Director focused on Human Rights to work on how we can decrease unwarranted surveillance of the public. This role takes on a whole new angle with the scaling of A. You’ll ideally have a background in privacy or tech policy or human rights law for this one.

  • Mentoring for young creatives: Are you a creative based in Berlin between the ages of 18-27? Soho House Berlin are offering free mentoring from creative leaders based in the city. You’ll also get a fancy 3 year Soho House membership thrown in.

  • London: Innocent drinks are looking for an Art Director / Senior Designer to join their team. You’ll be working on everything from big ad campaigns to packaging. FYI they’re known as a top employer in the UK.

  • Lithuania/UK: Flo Health is an app that helps track your period and ovulation cycle, they’ve had +300M downloads and are looking for a Product Designer focused on health.

  • Australia/West Coast US: Last week I did a round up of regenerative farming roles for the non farmers amongst us 👩‍🌾. But one new opportunity just came in, it’s a remote Director of Software Engineering role at Regrow Ag, a climate tech company reducing carbon emissions from farming — currently they’re monitoring more than 150 million acres of land in 45 countries.

Dip your toe into VC…

Look, venture capital is one of those things that you’re either intrigued by or not, but if you’ve caught the startup bug and want to go the investing route, here’s 7 opportunities to pivot into VC…

  • Global/Online: For those who want the ultimate crash course in venture capital, Berkeley Law offers a 10-week VC University twice a year. It’s an online program that’s still accepting applications for this month’s cohort.

  • Berlin: They’re probably the most respected startup accelerator programme after Y Combinator, and now Techstars has opened up applications for their Spring ‘24 cohort of Visiting Associates.

  • London: This role is for all the science fans who someone ended up in a marketing career (raises hand 🙋🏻‍♀️). It’s the first time I’ve seen a ‘Chief Editor’ position advertised — but Deep Science Ventures, which focuses on science founders and their startups, are looking for someone to lead their brand building and storytelling work.

  • Paris: It’s the world’s biggest startup campus, and now Station F are on the hunt for a Community Coordinator to be their ‘human encyclopaedia’ and connect startups, investors and partners across Paris — there are +1000 plus startups based at Station F, so you’ll be busy. Ideally you’ll speak French and English.

  • London: Are you a developer wanting to try out the world of VC? Seedcamp is looking for a Tech Associate to work with their Head of Tech.

  • California/Hybrid: Meanwhile over on the West Coast, Stanford Impact Labs’ investment team are looking for an Impact & Learning Manager. You’ll need to have strong analytical skills for this one.

  • New York/Seattle/Boston: For those who’ve been in the finance game for awhile, Earth Finance is looking for a Director/Senior Director of Equity Investing who wants to pivot into climate driven startups. One interesting thing — they’re offering unlimited holidays (very rare for a US based employer).

Get your activist on…

What impact does activism actually have? Well, academic researchers in Switzerland released a new report showing that 30% of the Swiss population changed their habits in the wake of the school climate protests led by Greta Thunberg.

What was interesting about the research was that they looked exclusively at people who hadn’t participated in activism and weren’t politicians (Greta’s target audience). And yes, activism can seem scary or something that other people do, but there’s many ways to try it out…

  • Join the biggest queue: One of my favourite things about being in the UK is the universal respect for the queue. And now Business Declares is asking workers in London to don a suit and form a giant queue to protest the UK government’s lack of climate action. I’m planning to be there, just need to find a suit by Friday. Come join me — it’ll be the world’s politest protest.

    • For those who need a quick refresh about why the The Big Queue is necessary, UK PM Rishi Sunak announced the reopening of UK oil fields and won’t be attending the UN General Assembly, for fears he’ll be turned away due to the UK’s poor climate policy.

  • Walk for Yes: Meanwhile Australia is heading to the polls in October to decide if there should be a First Nations Voice in parliament. The topic has been hugely divisive and this weekend, September 16th and 17th, thousands are expected to walk (not march) across the country in support of a yes vote. Find out where your local Walk for Yes is.

    • ✨If you’re an Australian based overseas don’t forget to register for a postal vote.

  • Go full corporate and embrace shareholder activism: Non profit, ShareAction is on the hunt for people globally to signup to be Annual General Meeting activists. You’ll be given training and support to ask questions that matter at listed companies’ AGMs. Using this tactic, ShareAction have pushed companies like HSBC and Unilever to take real steps for climate. They’ve since gone global and need a broader reach of AGM Activists to support their work.

Learning opportunities

Next week

Coming up next week we’re going to look at one of the most increasingly popular career changes, becoming a therapist. And there will be the usual roundup of opportunities to scale your impact. Got a role you think I should share? Send me an email or a LinkedIn DM.

Signing off from a hesitantly sunny London …

Hannah, your questing opportunity seeker in arms

P.S. Got a spare second and feeling generous of heart?

I’m finishing off a newsletter while sitting in Tower Hamlets, London — so it seems right to highlight one of the small, but impactful local non profits, Switchback, as this week’s giving partner. Their purpose is to enable young men to find a way out of the justice system and build a stable, rewarding life they’re proud of.

Not to overburden you with the heavy stuff here, but I’m going in… did you know that half of people released from the prison system in the UK end up being back inside within a year? It’s one of the highest rates in the world.

But this non profit have created a relationship model that works. Those who have a mentor through Switchback have only a 9% chance of ending up back inside. That’s a big difference. There’s multiple ways you can support this small but mighty org:

  • First up, they shared that they’re looking for 4 trustees — they’ll give you training, so welcome those who have this as a first board role. They’re also open to those under 30. Interested? Have a look at the board pack.

  • A bit time poor? You can help scale their work and donate; currently they’re supporting 500 young men each year, but you could bring that number up.

  • There’s currently a waiting list for new mentors, sign up here.

Want to dive in deep? They’ve got an award-winning podcast, each episode follows a young Londoner who’s been to prison and defied the odds after release. I’m also keen to hear about similar non profit projects in other countries — so if you know of any send me an email reply.

There’s not really one word to describe the relationship with my Switchback Mentor. She’s someone you’re close to but who is outside your peer group; someone non-judgmental who understands you. I never had someone like that in my life before. She helped me find the answers for myself.

Eshan, former Switchback trainee
