Climate impact for PR and communications

I have dug deeeeep into the world of PR and communications for these roles. And while I wasn’t planning to make everything about climate, turns out I largely could. There are some excellent positions right now for those who want to tackle the big, bad fossil fuel giants of this world.

  • Remote: Founders Pledge has raised 10 billion💸 for impact from cashed up, exited founders, and they’re looking for a Climate Communications Manager to help scale that. Wanting to join as a founder? Sign up here.

  • Brussels/London: One of my favourite orgs, ClientEarth is looking for a Global Head of Communications. This will be a wild ride as they’re ambitious enough to sue Shell’s board of directors, and successfully held airline KLM to account for greenwashing. Bonus is that you get to work with former diplomat turned CEO, Laura Clarke as your main spokesperson. Deadline: Aug 27th

  • Brussels: And while I’m here talking up Client Earth they also have a mid-level Digital Communications Role, focused on social media and website management. You get to work with Irene Lorenzo, who cut her teeth on comms for Stonewall and Birdlife International. It’s not essential, but they’d love a German speaker.

  • Remote: Did you know about 2-3% of global emissions comes from tech (and who doesn’t see that rising with AI)? Action Speaks Louder is an Australian non profit looking for a comms Big Tech campaigner to help hold the industry to account. Deadline: Aug 26th

  • Remote: Avaaz — which always sounds like an insurance company to me, but is actually a huge campaigning org with 70M members — is on the hunt for a Director of Communications. It’s a big role, but comes with a strong salary + generous personal development budget.

*Working in an PR agency but a climate warrior at heart? Have a look at the Clean Creatives Pledge — it’s for agencies who commit to not working for fossil fuel giants. Get your agency to join the 688 globally who won’t work for the likes of BP, Shell and Total.

What’s kicking around in VC and founder world…

  • Berlin: Impact Hub is hosting a networking event for wxmen founders working in green tech and their allies on Wednesday, Aug 30th. You don’t need to be a founder to attend, register here.

  • London: Applications shut in less than a week for the Zinc Venture Builder. It’s one of the more financially generous options out there for would-be founders. You’ll be paired up to work on startup solutions to eliminate environmental threats to our health.

  • London/Hybrid: I love this opportunity — Big Society Capital (one of the good ones) is looking for a Venture Investment Manager. A funder of funds, this org is on a mission to pivot VC towards impact. While they’d like someone with startup or VC experience, it’s not essential and they’re open to visa sponsorship. Deadline: Sept 6th

  • Germany/hybrid: Have a strong climate, analytics or engineering background and want to pivot into VC? World Fund VC (who I advise) are looking for a Climate Impact Expert, and the silver lining is that you get to work with the excellent Daniel Valenzuela, who is as smart as he is kind.

  • London: Talking of good people, one of my LinkedIn favourites, Abadesi Osunsade shared that she’s kicking off an inclusive accelerator for solo entrepreneur’s called Playschool — it sounds just like what the ecosystem needs.

A deep dive into fellowships… what exactly are they?

What even are fellowships? Being a Fellow is most commonly associated with academia, but there are funding fellowships offered by news outlets and philanthropic foundations. Others are membership based, like the Royal Society or the Linnean Society. Being a member comes with community benefits, a network and of course the external recognition that can help your career.

Here’s a round up of some of the most interesting:

  • Royal Society of Arts: I’m biased, as I’ve been a member since 2021, and love the events and focus on social impact. In a couple of weeks I plan to spend time in London working from the RSA House instead of a co-working space. And there’s something cool about belonging to an institution that Marie Curie and Benjamin Franklin were also members of.

    • They’ve just launched a young RSA programme for 18-24 year old changemakers that’s a lot cheaper.

    • One thing to note, the UK got carried away with ‘Royal Societies’ there’s over 50 👑. So if you are a specialist in geology, astronomy, economics, there is a home for you.

  • Ashoka Fellow: This one’s for social entrepreneurs working on some of the world’s biggest problems. There are 4000 members in 95 countries, and you need to be nominated.

  • Churchill Fellowship: This is a grant for UK citizens to travel, discover new ideas and apply them for positive change back home. They frequently fund younger applicants and are interested in climate change and tech-for-all as topics.

  • Winston Churchill Fellowship: Look we have very mixed feelings about Churchill, so this seems like a lot of name drops. But a similar travel fund and fellowship exists for Australians — applications open early 2024.

  • Open Society: This US based society has a number of Fellow programs opening throughout the year focused on democracy initiatives. Right now they’ve got one live for orgs in East Africa.

A number of tech focused orgs like Mozilla, Spotify and On Deck offer fellowships at different points in the year. For journalists, check out this list of opportunities.

Learning opportunities

Next week

I’m tossing up between doing a creative or a science special so let’s see! But there will be a round up of those rarely seen C-Level roles, and trustee opportunities to kick off your board career.

Signing off from a beautiful sunny day in Berlin…

Hannah, your questing opportunity seeker in arms

P.S. Got a spare second and feeling generous of heart?

Our giving highlight this week is Beam. They’re a tech driven social business helping those who are homeless get work and a home. It was started by Alex Stephany after he wanted to find ways to help a man who was homeless at his local train station. These campaigns need some final top ups:

  • There’s Abdulaziz who wants to work as a construction worker.

  • Joyce who needs support for the first month’s rent.

  • And Veronika who wants to get a place to live with her sister after fleeing Ukraine.

What to know more? Beam have shared some of their success stories, and Alex did a Ted Talk on new ways to tackle homelessness.
