And if you want to know who’s writing this… hi I’m Hannah 👋. I advise startups and non profits as a board director, and help people figure out how to develop or pivot their careers as a coach.

There are now a 1000 of you reading this email, so I just wanted to say a big thank you for subscribing 💛. Before we dive in, here’s a perspective on how things actually get done from comedian and author Caitlin Moran…

The future is a communal effort, like a patchwork quilt. Everyone interested in forming our society takes a square each - a square they have chosen according to their interests, knowledge and ability - and sews it, and then we join them together to make a fabulous quilt. That’s how things get done.

Businesses you didn’t know existed…

A bean company. A library of things. Countering digital hate. AI for restaurants. Creating community for those with endometriosis. These are all orgs needing support right now to scale their unique areas of expertise, and you might just be a fit…

  • London: This week I learnt that broad beans, contain a chemical that literally creates joy (it was part of the send out of the excellent The Know newsletter). And then I spotted a post from Amelia Christie-Miller, the CEO of the Bold Bean Co and it seemed serendipitous. She’s looking for:

They’re offering a lot of work benefits, including a 30 minute wellness break each workday for yoga or meditation (in addition to lunch breaks).

  • Washington DC: The Centre for Countering Digital Hate pushes back on the spread of digital hate and misinformation that has real, offline consequences. They’re looking for a Head of Communications to support legislation change to protect our human rights online. While it is US based, you’ll be working with Brussels and UK team members to change legislation there - so any EU experience is a bonus.

  • London/Hybrid: Did you know there is a Library of Things? Basically rather than borrowing a book you can borrow a drill, a carpet cleaner or a speaker for your next party. They’re looking for a Co-CEO to join them in growing out a new part of the circular economy. Offices are in Brixton, and they’re wanting someone in the office 2-3 days a week.

  • Berlin/Global: About 40% of food produced globally goes to waste, and most of that happens before the food even reaches your table. Choco is a startup bringing AI to food supply chains, particularly hospitality. They’re hiring more than 20 roles, including a Business Developer in the US, an Account Exec in Paris, and a VP of Product and Head of Marketing in Berlin.

  • Australia: Meanwhile in Aus, Endo Articles is hiring for a Board Chair, 5x Directors and a Company Secretary. It’s a relatively new charity working to create community and support for the one million women in Australia with endometriosis. View the board pack here.

How to get paid to be creative

Creative roles can be competitive, and the job market is often freelance heavy without a security safety net. But here’s four positions that allow you to not only get paid a regular salary, but also to work on making art, design and creative impact more accessible.

  • Remote: There’s a fully remote role with the Global Strategic Communications Council that’s just gone live. They’re looking to hire a Creative Strategy Manager to lead on creative production to scale their climate campaigning globally. Ideally you’ll be an experienced strategist with a strong network of creatives, both agency and freelance.

  • Berlin: Passionfroot are one of my favourite Berlin based startups. They’re finding ways to support creators in building sustainable businesses without the mind numbing admin. They’re looking for a Senior Product Engineer to support their work as they scale.

  • London: They might be largely based in Australia, but Canva are looking for a London based Creative Director to manage all of their creative production for Europe. Agency or inhouse experience are both fine for this one.

    • Find out more about the company’s impact strategy here.

  • Los Angeles/Hybrid: The Getty Trust (which is behind LA’s Getty Museum) is on the hunt for a Senior UX Designer. You’ll be working across one of the world’s biggest art collections, bringing it to life on digital sites like their research archives, education platform and main site. And for a US-based role there are a lot of employee benefits…

💡 Want to find other creative roles or hire a creative? A lot of creative roles don’t end up on traditional job sites. Instead they’re shared by word of mouth or posted on specific job boards. Working not Working is one with freelance creative opportunities and a large community of designers. And Dribble is a good one for full time creative and designer roles.

For the inbetweeners

In between roles and want to get your foot in the door? Often when you’re out of work the best way forward is to do some interim or contract work. It helps the bank balance (and enables you to keep calm and carry on with the job quest). Below are 4 opportunities to land some contract or freelance work…

  • Remote UK: B-Lab in the UK is looking for a freelance designer to help turn their strategy into visual, simple and beautiful designs. Reach out to Megan Dacey if that’s you.

  • Hamburg/Remote: One of Germany’s most loved green startups, Tomorrow Bank has two contract roles open to help cover parental leave. They’re looking for a Growth Marketing Manager and a Head of Business Unit. While the contracts run for 12 months, there is the potential of permanent employment 👀.

  • Remote UK: Across the UK there are 47 community foundations working to fund and support grassroots community action and charities. Their member org, UK Community Foundations are looking for a part-time Director of Strategic Communications to help shape their comms direction. Full disclosure, I’m supporting on hiring for this one so feel free to reply to this email if you want me to refer your application.

  • USA: It’s crunch time for US politics, and there are over 70 roles being hired for Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign. There’s everything from video editing to travel booking - plus this important role as Climate Director.

Learning opportunities

If you’re deep in holiday mode, developing a new skill might be the furthest thing from your mind. But here’s some upcoming opportunities for those who want to hit the ground running post summer break…

  • Develop design thinking: Intrigued by design thinking? Maybe you want to lead in a more creative way, or ensure your company puts humans at the centre of business decisions (which seems like a no brainer, but sometimes it is unfortunately an after thought). IDEO has certificates in the Foundations of Design Thinking and Advanced Design Thinking. They also have courses in leadership, strategy, and communicating for impact. Plus anyone who enrols this August gets to join their new AI x Design Thinking workshop series.

  • How to start writing: Many of us have a secret dream to write, whether its novels, poetry, screenplays or even newsletters like this. The hardest part is beginning. One way to get some momentum is with the London-based CityLit. They have 100s of short courses and workshops. A lot are offered online and they’re not expensive. You can learn how to write crime fiction, improve your grammar, take masterclasses in poetry and start your novel.

  • SXSW: March 2025 seems a long way off. There’s a whole US election to get through before then. But the chance to register to attend the world’s biggest combined tech, music and film showcase in Austin next year opens on August 6. For those who don’t want to spend over a $1000 on a SXSW ticket 💸, there’s also a newsletter of volunteer opportunities you can subscribe to here.

    • Are you a startup founder? Applications are open to pitch your startup at SXSW, and you have until September 8 to do it with the lower cost earlybird fee.

Signing off from a sunny day in Scotland 🌞

P.S. Got a spare second and feeling generous of heart?

Before I truly stop writing I wanted to give a shoutout to Safe Passage. They’re a small, but mighty non profit that works across the EU to connect unaccompanied child refugees with family in the UK.

I did a virtual coffee with one of their team this week, and it was a reminder of how impactful their work is 🧡. With team members in France, Poland and Greece, they help about 2000 children find and reconnect with family members each year. Many of these children are homeless or living alone in refugee camps.

Not sure you have the funds right now to donate directly? You can get ideas of how to support through running a marathon, creating a bake sale at work, or simply by putting together a birthday fundraiser here.

Want to find out more about the org first? Read their 2023/24 Impact Report or follow their work on instagram.
